Last Updated: 10/21/2025

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT XARELTO

  • XARELTO is a blood thinner medicine (anticoagulant) that lowers blood clotting. XARELTO can cause bleeding which can be serious and may lead to death. During treatment with XARELTO you are likely to bruise more easily, and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. You may have a higher risk of bleeding if you take XARELTO and have certain other medical problems.1
  • You may have a higher risk of bleeding if you take XARELTO and take other medicines that increase your risk of bleeding, including1:
    • aspirin or aspirin containing products
    • long-term (chronic) use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
    • warfarin sodium (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)
    • any medicine that contains heparin
    • clopidogrel (Plavix®)
    • selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
    • other medicines to prevent or treat blood clots
  • Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you or your child develop any signs or symptoms of bleeding.1

summary

Here is a passage from the XARELTO PRESCRIBING INFORMATION which may be helpful to address your question:

Is there a way to Reverse the Effects of XARELTO?

  • XARELTO increases the risk of bleeding and can cause serious or fatal bleeding.1
  • There is a specific medicine available that can reverse (or stop) the effects of XARELTO.1
  • Because XARELTO sticks to proteins in the blood, it cannot be removed using dialysis (a process to clean the blood).1
  • There are other medicines that might help stop bleeding, like prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC), activated prothrombin complex, or recombinant factor VIIa, but they have not been fully tested to know if they work well and are safe.1
  • It is not recommended to check how well XARELTO is working using blood tests such as PT, INR, or aPTT or anti-factor Xa activity.1
