summary

Here is a passage from the INVOKANA PRESCRIBING INFORMATION and MEDICATION GUIDE along with other resources that may be helpful to address your question:

What Should I Know About the Management of Yeast Infections While Taking INVOKANA?

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF INVOKANA

  • Vaginal yeast infections and yeast infections of the penis.1

CHANCES OF GETTING A YEAST INFECTION WHILE ON INVOKANA

  • INVOKANAincreases the risk of genital mycotic infections (yeast infections) in both male and female patients.1

SYMPTOMS OF A YEAST INFECTION

  • Vaginal yeast infection1:
    • vaginal odor
    • white or yellowish vaginal discharge (may be lumpy or look like cottage cheese)
    • vaginal itching
  • Yeast infection of the skin around the penis (balanitis or balanoposthitis): If you are uncircumcised, swelling may make it difficult to pull back the skin around the tip of your penis. Other symptoms include1:
    • redness, itching, or swelling of the penis
    • bad smelling discharge from the penis
    • rash on the penis
    • pain in the skin around the penis

TREATMENT OF A YEAST INFECTION

  • Talk to your healthcare provider about what to do if you get symptoms of a yeast infection. They may suggest you use an over-the-counter antifungal medicine.1
  • Contact your healthcare provider right away if your symptoms do not improve after using an over-the-counter antifungal medicine.1

WAYS TO HELP PREVENT A YEAST INFECTION

  • Wearing tight, poorly ventilated clothing and underwear also can contribute to yeast infections. Women who get four or more (recurring) yeast infections in a year should work with their healthcare provider to find out possible underlying causes.2
  • To reduce your risk of vaginal yeast infection:
    • Do not douche.2,3
    • Do not use scented feminine products, including bubble bath, sprays, pads, and tampons.2,3
    • Change tampons, pads, and panty liners often.2
    • After using the bathroom, always wipe from front to back.2
    • Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting pants or skirts.2,3
    • Avoid tight-fitting underwear or pantyhose.2,3
    • Immediately change out of wet clothes, such as swimsuits or workout attire.2,3
    • Stay out of hot tubs or very hot baths.2,3
    • Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use, such as for colds or other viral infections. Check with your healthcare provider.3
  • Scientists do not know why fungal infections develop in some individuals and not others.  Studies suggest that eating eight ounces of yogurt daily can help prevent infection; however, more research still needs to be done to say for sure if yogurt or other probiotics can prevent or treat vaginal yeast infections. If you think you have a yeast infection, see your healthcare provider or nurse to make sure before taking any over-the-counter medicine.2
