Dosing - Splitting TOPAMAX Tablets

Last Updated: 07/21/2026

SUMMARY

  • TOPAMAX tablets are not scored; therefore, they are not intended to be split.
  • Splitting unscored TOPAMAX tablets is not recommended due to the inability to assure the intended dosage in each fragment.
  • Dose variation could lead to adverse clinical outcomes.
  • Evaluations have not been performed to assure drug stability, safety or efficacy when using broken, divided or otherwise altered TOPAMAX tablets.
  • If the tablets are broken, their stability cannot be guaranteed for any period of time.
  • TOPAMAX is a white crystalline powder with a bitter taste.1
  • Once the integrity of the film coating is compromised, the bitter taste may no longer be masked.
  • In summary, clinical consequences should be considered due to stability, dose variation, and patient compliance.
