RISPERDAL may cause serious side effects, including1:

  • increased risk of death in elderly patients who have dementia-related psychosis who experienced confusion, have memory loss, and have lost touch with reality. RISPERDAL is not approved for treating dementia-related psychosis.

Other possible side effects of RISPERDAL include1:

  • cerebrovascular adverse events, including stroke, in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a serious medical condition that can be life-threatening. It has been linked to antipsychotic medications. Call your healthcare provider right away if you become severely ill and have any of these symptoms:
    • high fever
    • shaking
    • stiff muscles, pain, or weakness
    • confusion
    • irregular heartbeat or blood pressure or fast heartbeat
    • sweating
  • tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements of a body part like face, tongue, etc.)
  • metabolic changes like hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia (change in the fat levels in the blood), and weight gain
  • hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin in the blood) which can cause side effects including missed menstrual periods, leakage of milk from the breasts, development of breasts in men, and erection difficulty
  • a drop in blood pressure upon standing, dizziness, or fainting, especially when starting, increasing the dose, or resuming RISPERDAL
  • potential increase in fall risk. Feeling sleepy or drowsy, a drop in blood pressure when standing that may cause dizziness, and/or trouble with balance can all lead to increasing the risk of falls, and in turn, injury, especially in older patients and those with certain health conditions or on certain medication
  • low white blood cell counts
  • problems thinking clearly and performing coordinated movements such as driving
  • seizures
  • difficulty swallowing, which can cause food or liquid to enter your lungs
  • prolonged or painful erection lasting more than 4 hours. Call your healthcare provider or go to your nearest emergency room right away if you have an erection that lasts more than 4 hours
  • trouble regulating body temperature. There is a risk of overheating or becoming too cold with RISPERDAL

The most common side effects with RISPERDAL include1:

  • parkinsonism (shaking or movement issues)
  • akathisia (a feeling of restlessness)
  • dystonia (muscle spasms or abnormal movements)
  • tremor (shaking)
  • feeling sleepy or tired
  • dizziness
  • anxiety (feeling nervous)
  • blurred vision
  • nausea (feeling sick to your stomach)
  • vomiting
  • pain in the upper stomach area
  • stomach discomfort
  • dyspepsia (upset stomach)
  • diarrhea (loose stools)
  • increased saliva
  • constipation (trouble going to the bathroom)
  • dry mouth
  • increased appetite
  • weight gain
  • fatigue (feeling very tired)
  • rash (skin problems)
  • stuffy nose
  • infections in the upper part of the lungs
  • nasopharyngitis (sore throat and stuffiness)
  • pain in the throat and voice box
